Rats do not comprehend why their pillow is cold.

Some rats are very well aware when their roommate has died that he is not coming back. When LJB finally passed away, Rattus Rattus' behavior was much more sluggish and spent all of his time on top of the cage looking for LJB. We had to tape his water bottle to the wall because he stopped going down in his cage.

Other rats just don't get it. Slinky's kids (affectionately referred to as "The Rat Fanclub" because of their constant "Happy to see you!" attitude), for example, will continue to sleep and step on the corpse, not realizing that it's cold and rigid.
